SPPS Board To Vote On School Start Times

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Next Tuesday, the St. Paul School Board will vote whether to change school start times.

Right now, most elementary schools start at 8:30 a.m, and many of the high schools and middle schools start at 7:30 a.m.

The latest draft would have 26 elementary schools start at 7:45 a.m., and 17 elementary schools start at 9:30 a.m. Middle and high schools would start at 8:30 a.m..

If approved, the changes wouldn't go into effect until the 2018-2019 school year.

This proposal has come after a lot of research, feedback from parents and going over bus schedule logistics.

U of M researchers said teenagers who go to school later perform better in class. Attendance also goes up and tardiness goes down.
