Police Investigate 6-Year-Old's Drowning Death As 'Suspicious'

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- Investigators are looking into the suspicious death of a 6-year-old girl in St. Paul.

Police were called to the 1300 block of Maynard Drive East at about 8 a.m. Tuesday. The initial call suggested there was a possible drowning.

Officers arrived to find that medics had already transported the girl to St. Paul Pediatric Hospital. Neighbors told officers that they heard a male voice screaming for help.

The girl was pronounced dead at the hospital. The medical examiner is working to determine the exact cause of death.

St. Paul Police Spokesman Steve Linders says the girl's mother was taken into custody.

"Based on information at the scene and information our officers and investigators obtained, they felt there was probable cause to make an arrest," Linders said.

Police say they will release more information on this case Wednesday morning.
