St. Paul Man Convicted In Shooting Death

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) – A 19-year-old St. Paul man was found guilty Tuesday in Ramsey County Court in the shooting death of a man in his home last September.

Aloeng Kelly Vang was found guilty of first-degree murder and second-degree murder in connection with the murder of Jeffrey Thomas Elling. Van was indicted by a grand jury on Feb. 12.

St. Paul Police were called on Sept. 1, 2013, to the area of York Avenue in the Lake Phalen neighborhood on a report of a shooting. According to court documents, Elling had witnessed a car speeding down his street and nearly hitting him and his girlfriend before parking at a nearby home.

Elling confronted the man about his reckless driving, words were exchanged between him and Vang and Elling pushed him to the ground. Van was apparently intoxicated at the time.

Authorities said they went their separate ways and a short time later, Elling's doorbell rang. As he opened it, two shots rang out and Elling fell to the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the trial, Vang admitted that he confronted Elling and shot him because he felt disrespected.

Vang was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
