St. Michael-Albertville Beats St. Thomas Academy For 1st Class 5A Title

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Mitchell Kartes rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns as St. Michael-Albertville held off St. Thomas Academy 28-21 on Saturday to win its first Class 5A championship.

Jacob Veire threw for 177 yards and Isaiah Weston had a touchdown reception for the Knights (12-1), who lost in the state semifinals the past two years.

Mac Brown had 120 receiving yards, including an 83-yard score, for St. Thomas Academy (11-2).

Tied at 14 midway through the third quarter, Weston hauled in a 25-yard pass from Veire. Kartes, a sophomore who hobbled off the field a few minutes earlier, scored from 1 yard out on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 28-14 lead.

Woody Hubbell had a 7-yard reception with 4:16 left, to get the Cadets within seven.
