St. Louis Co. Sheriff: Alcohol Likely A Factor In Serious Crash

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Alcohol may have been a factor in a crash that injured two men Friday night in St. Louis County.

The sheriff's office says the crash happened at about 6:25 p.m. on Highway 7 and Zim Road in McDavitt Township.

Eighty-two-year-old Gerald Koepke, of Zim Township, was driving eastbound on Zim Road when he tried to turn northbound on Hwy 7.

He collided with 31-year-old driver Michael Vieau, of Mountain Iron, who was travelling southbound. Vieau suffered serious injuries in the crash, and was transported by helicopter to a Duluth-area hospital.

Koepke was taken to Essential Health-Virginia Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Authorities say Koepke may have been under the influence of alcohol.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's office is investigating.
