St. Cloud State Beats North Dakota 3-1

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — Jonny Brodzinski scored twice in the third period to lead St. Cloud State to a 3-1 National Collegiate Hockey Conference win over North Dakota on Friday.

Brodzinski broke a 1-1 tie at 1:38 of the third period and added an insurance goal on the power play at 9:43, as the Huskies (5-5-1, 2-2-1 NCHC) handed UND its first road loss of the season.

The Huskies outshot UND 34-27.

"We had a pretty good first period. We just didn't do enough of the good basic things in the second half of the game," UND coach Dave Hakstol said. "Turnovers just outside of our own blue line started to hurt us. And we lost the special teams battle. That sums it up."

SCSU was 2-for-4 on the power play, while UND was scoreless in three chances. It also lost the faceoff battle 34-22.

"That's what changed the momentum in the first period was five faceoff losses in a row in our own zone," Hakstol said. He later went on to say, "They were the better team by quite a bit in the faceoff dot tonight."

SCSU continued its success against second-ranked UND (8-3-1, 3-2-0). SCSU is 6-1-1 in last eight games against North Dakota. The Huskies won three of four meetings last season while edging UND for the regular season NCHC title.

Nathan Prow scored the game's first goal for SCSU at 5:10 of the second period. With Luke Johnson in the box for interference, Prow fired a shot straight down the slot through traffic and past McIntyre.

Drake Caggiula tied it for UND late in the period. Caggiula caught the rebound of a shot by Tucker Poolman, dropped it to his stick and scored while backing away from the net. It was the only mistake by SCSU goalie Charlie Lindgren, who made 26 saves. North Dakota's Zane McIntyre had 31 saves.

Brodzinski scored on the Huskies' first shot of the third period. Brodzinski netted his sixth goal of the season just 1:38 into the period for 2-1 lead. With his team leading by a goal, Brodzinski camped in front of the net and swiped the puck out of the air for a 3-1 advantage.

UND played much of the closing minutes short-handed.

"We had opportunities in the third period, a couple we got on net and he made good saves and a couple we didn't get on net," Hakstol said.
