St. Cloud Standoff Suspect In Custody After 'Peaceful Surrender'

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (WCCO) -- Police in St. Cloud say a suspect involved in a standoff with law enforcement Tuesday is in custody after a "peaceful surrender."

Central Minnesota Violent Offender Task Force members served a warrant for a 37-year-old man at an apartment on the 2700 block of 16th Street South at about 8:35 a.m. Police say the man "threatened to shoot officers through the closed door," and threatened to kill himself.

A couple minutes later, the man fired a round through a wall, which exited near officers in the hallway. No one was hurt.

Police then evacuated the building and established a perimeter outside, and the city's SWAT team and several other agencies mobilized. Crisis negotiators soon began communicating with the man via phone, and almost eight hours later, he surrendered "without incident or injury."

The man is awaiting criminal charges at the Stearns County Jail.
