Hundreds Rally At St. Anthony City Hall For Philando Castile
ST. ANTHONY, Minn. (WCCO) -- On the heels of a violent protest in St. Paul Saturday night, there was another rally and march in the Twin Cities Sunday afternoon.
It's all in response to last Wednesday's police shooting in Falcon Heights. Philando Castile, 32, was shot and killed by a St. Anthony police officer.
Late Sunday afternoon, a group of protesters marched up and down Silver Lake Road in the north metro. It started as a rally at the St. Anthony Police Department earlier in the afternoon. That's where the officer who shot Philando Castile on Wednesday night, works.
The rally wrapped up at about 5 p.m. back near the St. Anthony police precinct.
"There needs to be accountability for those officers who shoot first and make up the details later," one protester said.
Several hundred people showed up to the rally, expressing passion. They then together they marched several blocks down the road before returning.
We talked with one man who came to watch the rally. He's lived in the neighborhood for 20 years.
"I walked up to see what's going on. Obviously I'm concerned over what happened. I'm upset," Alexander McKinney of St. Anthony said. "Police officers in this neighborhood are pretty good guys, but what happened seems to be a tragedy."
This is one of a list of support rallies on Sunday. Another starts at 7 p.m. at the Governor's mansion in St. Paul.
On Saturday night, protesters shut down Interstate 94 in St. Paul. More than 100 people were arrested, and 21 law enforcement officials were hurt after some of the protesters hurled rocks, bottles and fireworks at them.
The protest was in response to Castile's death, as well as the fatal police shooting of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
