Solar Car Race To End At University Of Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A cross-country solar car race is set to finish at the University of Minnesota on Monday.

About 10 solar cars from colleges around the world are competing in the eight-day, 1,700-mile American Solar Challenge.

The race began July 21 in Austin, Texas. The eighth and final day of racing begins Monday morning in La Crosse, Wisconsin, with teams traveling the final 154 miles northwest to the finish line on the University of Minnesota's East Bank campus in Minneapolis.

The University of Minnesota Solar Vehicle Project team is among the competitors. Their 16-foot-long car, named Centaurus III, includes a newly revamped electrical system, improved aerodynamics and new safety features, and weighs just under 400 pounds.
