Is Winter Wonderland Just A Weekend Away?

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The weather outside has been anything but frightful, unless it gives you pause that Minnesota has consistently been 10 to 15 degrees above average for weeks now.

WCCO meteorologist Matt Brickman said that late Thursday could bring the start of a transition into more seasonally appropriate weather. Spotty showers could begin Thursday and continue overnight.

Brickman said a low pressure system could help change the precipitation over into snow, starting with a line in western Minnesota early Friday morning.

The line should track across Minnesota and reach the Twin Cities by noon Friday. The snow could continue through the afternoon before the front sweeps toward Wisconsin.

Brickman said that a cluster of counties in west central Minnesota are under a blizzard watch, and a number of others across most of the western half of the state are under a winter storm watch.

Brickman says parts of far northern Minnesota could get more than 10 inches of snow by Saturday night.

Six to 10 inches could fall in areas including Bemidji, Alexandria and stretching to far western Minnesota. Closer to the Twin Cities, three to six inches could fall in areas including Brainerd and St. Cloud. As for the Twin Cities, anywhere from a dusting to an inch or two could fall.

The National Weather Service also predicts significant snow totals, but that the heavy amounts will miss the Twin Cities.
