Small Explosion At U Of M Sends 1 To Hospital

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- One person has been transported to Hennepin County Medical Center after a small explosion at the University of Minnesota, according to authorities.

The Minneapolis Police Department said the explosion happened at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday in a lab on the fourth floor of Smith Hall at the school.

The building was evacuated.

Officials say the person who was transported to the hospital suffered minor injuries. The victim was conscious with serious burns, according to a release.

According to the U of M news service, an organic compound exploded. There was no fire as a result of the explosion but the building remains closed. A determination will be made later if access will be allowed for afternoon and evening classes.
