Single Sort Recycling Starts In St. Paul

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Recycling just got easier, and more inclusive, in St. Paul.

Starting Monday, residents could put all recyclables into one bin for pickup. They can also recycle more plastics -- things like produce and deli containers, yogurt cups, and shampoo bottles.

But Styrofoam and plant pots are still not accepted.

Officials made the change because they saw a drop in recycling rates.

"You'll no longer have to separate materials, which makes it so much easier to have one bin that you can throw everything in to," said Mayor Chris Coleman.

He says that residents should continue to use blue bins or paper bags for recycling. That's until new containers with lids and wheels are delivered next year.

Minneapolis began single sort recycling last year.
