Uber Driver Arrested After Uptown Minneapolis Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – An overnight shooting in Minneapolis' Uptown neighborhood has landed an Uber driver in jail.

Witnesses say gunshots were fired around 2 a.m. on the 1400 block of Lagoon Avenue, just outside the Uptown Tavern.

Minneapolis police arrested the suspected gunman, 38-year-old Abshir Yusuf Qanyare, of Mankato. They say he works as an Uber driver.

The victim, 26-year-old Abdullahi Mohamed of Minneapolis, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. He is expected to be OK.

One witness said he was playing darts inside Uptown Tavern when he heard gunshots and then saw Mohamed come stumbling through the doors. Mohamed was bleeding and holding a gun, the witness said. It appeared he was shot in the stomach.

No one else was hurt in the shooting, which remains under investigation. Police have yet to say what led up to the violence.

Qanyare was booked into the Hennepin County Jail, pending felony assault charges.
