Man Shot In Leg On LRT Franklin Avenue Platform

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- An early morning shooting along the Metro Transit LRT Blue Line has sent one person to the hospital.

Police say the shooting happened at the Franklin Avenue station platform around 2 a.m.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was shot in the leg on the light rail platform, according to Metro Transit police.

He is expected to be all right.

A spokesman for Metro Transit said police have preliminary information about what may have led to the shooting but are not releasing that information at this time.

People who visit the station on a regular basis told WCCO that the area is known for sketchy behavior and people.  However, there are emergency phones they can use to call for help, if needed.

Riders said they also take extra precautions to stay safe.

"It could've been me," Metro Transit rider Jackie Worthy said. "It makes me want to be more careful around this area and not take [the train], but if you have no other transportation, it's kind of hard to avoid those situations."

A spokesman for Metro Transit released a statement.

"We pride ourselves on the fact that light rail transit is safe," a spokesperson for Metro Transit said. "Incidents can happen anywhere. Thankfully, they don't often happen here."

Police said they don't plan on increasing security since these sorts of dangerous incidents are rare.

Riders did not face any significant delays following the shooting Friday morning. Service is now running regularly at the Franklin Avenue station.

The Metro Transit Police Department is now investigating the incident.
