Sheriff: Woman With Knife Shot By Robbinsdale Officer

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- An 18-year-old student is in the hospital Thursday evening after a Robbinsdale police officer shot her.

Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek says police were called to an apartment building on the 3700 block of Hubbard Avenue North at about 5:40 p.m. on a call about an unwanted person.

When they arrived, they say they encountered a woman with a knife and a police officer shot her when she refused to drop it.

In an interview with WCCO, the family said the woman was unarmed and that she has been arrested but not charged.

"Another unarmed black youth," one family member said.

The family said she is in stable condition at North Memorial Medical Center after being shot in the torso.

"When I walked up, I heard her mom screaming, 'Why did you shoot her? You didn't have to shoot her? Why did you shoot my baby?'" a neighbor, Shonice Lumpkins, said. "She was laying by her body just crying, and they handcuffed her and dragged her to the police car."

Stanek said his department is gathering information, processing evidence and interviewing the suspect.

No officers were injured in the incident.
