Sheriff: Teen Rescued After Canoeing Over Waterfall In BWCA

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A teenage boy was rescued after being trapped under a log for hours after going over a waterfall in a canoe Wednesday afternoon.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office says they received report of the emergency just after 1 p.m. on Basswood Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

The teen was one of three people riding in a canoe which went over the Upper Basswood Falls near the Canadian border.

Rescuers freed him at about 5:15 p.m., and about two hours later a helicopter flew him to a seaplane, which then took him to an ambulance. He was eventually taken to an Ely hospital.

He suffered a possible ankle fracture and hypothermia in the ordeal. His identity has not been released.
