Sheriff: Man Arrested After Attacking Woman With Axe At Campground

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 32-year-old man was arrested Sunday after a woman was allegedly attacked with hatchet or axe at a northern Minnesota campground on Friday, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities received a report of an assault at about 9:49 a.m. at the Echo Lake Campground. When officers arrived, a female had been injured after being hit by a hatchet or axe. The victim was taken to a hospital with a minor, non-life threatening injury.

The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office located the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Leonard Kochevar of Gilbert, on Sunday. He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and fifth-degree domestic assault in connection with the incident.

Authorities said Kochevar and the woman had been in an argument before the assault. Kochevar is in custody in the St. Louis County Jail. The incident remains under investigation.
