Sheriff: Iowa Man Killed In St. Louis County ATV Crash

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 68-year-old Iowa man died Monday afternoon in an ATV crash near Lake Vermillion, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities responded at about 3:50 p.m. to a single vehicle ATV crash on the 4900 block of Mud Creek Road, north of Eagle's Nest Township. The location is near Lake Vermillion in the Tower-Ely area in far northern Minnesota.

When officers arrived, the driver, identified as Charles Malmgren of Blairston, Iowa, was heading east on the 4900 block of Mud Creek Road on his four-wheeler when it left the roadway, entered the south ditch and hit a rock. Malmgren was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said what led up to the crash is under investigation, but alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
