Sheriff Warning Residents After Home Burglaries Rise In Hennepin County

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Authorities are warning residents in several Hennepin County communities after a recent rise in home burglaries.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office says there has been rise in burglaries in Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, Edina, St. Louis Park, Bloomington and neighboring communities. Authorities say there have been dozens of incidents, and thieves have been accessing the homes through attached garages.

An investigation shows that suspects are getting access by taking garage door openers from vehicles parked outside in driveways, entering through an already open garage door or kicking in an exterior garage service door.

Authorities say the break-ins are happening at all times of the day and both when residents are home and away. The suspects are targeting small, but highly-valuable items including cash, wallets, purses and jewelry.

Sherrif Rich Stanek says it's a reminder to be vigilant in your neighborhood and if you see any suspicious activity, call 911.
