Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Unveils Historic Statue

SHAKOPEE, Minn. (WCCO) -- A new historic statue was unveiled on Tuesday in downtown Shakopee.

The statue is of Chief Sakpe, who was the leader of a Mdewakanton Dakota village in the mid-1800s. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community is giving the city the statue, along with a grant to support the artwork's restoration and installation.

The statue was sculpted by artist from a tribe in Oklahoma. It will be on display near the new "Shakopee" sign at the Highway 101 entrance.
