Sen. Klobuchar Cracks Down On Distracted Driving

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Senator Amy Klobuchar announced new legislation Saturday that will crack down on distracted driving.

The bipartisan legislation introduced by Klobuchar will help fund extra enforcement and public education on distracted driving.

Klobuchar joined the Shreya Dixit Memorial Foundation to announce the legislation at a walk Saturday.

The Eden Prairie 19-year-old died in 2007 in a distracted driving accident.

While riding home with a friend from college, the driver turned to grab something from the back seat and crashed.

"Our daughter was a giver. She was a donor and she was one of the first responders, even at the 35W bridge. So, we knew where she was going. And when we decided to do something in her name, I thought 'Oh, she would definitely support this," Shreya's father Vijay Dixit said.

The Department of Public Safety says distracted driving causes one in four crashes in Minnesota.

That results to about 70 deaths and 350 serious injuries each year.

Sen. Klobuchar said no text is worth dying for.
