SD Man Accused Of Seriously Injuring A Baby Gets 10 Years

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota man accused of seriously injuring a baby who repeatedly woke him up has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

U.S. District Judge Charles Kornmann sentenced 27-year-old Brett Roach, who was found guilty of assault resulting in serious bodily injury in connection with the incident in May 2013.

Prosecutors say the McLaughlin man was babysitting his wife's young children when he forcefully threw the baby off the bed and across the room after the baby repeatedly woke him up. Roach called 911 when he noticed the baby was unconscious.

Doctors determined the baby had suffered skull fractures and remained in critical condition for a long time.

Roach is under the custody of the U.S. Marshals. It wasn't immediately clear whether he has an attorney.
