Scrapbooking Supply Company Archiver's Closing Stores

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A popular scrapbooking store will soon be a memory. Archiver's announced Friday that after 14 years it's going out of business.

There are 33 Archiver's locations across the country, but the small business is based out of Minnetonka. In a statement, Archiver's says it's tried to adapt, but many customers are turning to online companies to make home-made gifts.

"Both my mom and mother-in-law say 'if I only get one thing, that's what I want to get,'" said Sara Gaustad, whose handcrafted calendars have become a staple of the holiday season.

She says she'll put about 40 hours into each calendar and $300 worth of supplies. The project needs paper, glue, photos, scissors, and decorating accessories.

Meanwhile, others like Carla Heckathorne have turned the page to the new digital era.

She switched to online scrapbooks six years ago after her second child was born.

"It's a little faster. Just a click, click, click rather than cut and measure," she said.

Heckathorne enjoys the creative outlet scrapbooking provides, but the simplicity of digital is appealing.

"I do a very simple photo book for the grandparents every year, and that's through Shutterfly or Peekaboo," she said. "I can get a dozen or so pages done in a few hours."

The online templates provide easy-to-use instructions that appeal to even the least creative of people. The layout is there, and you just put your pictures in them.

Prices between online and traditional scrapbooks vary.

The base price for online books is around $15-20 while most blank books for scrapbooking cost around $20.
