Savage 5th Grader Leads Day Of Service For Community

SAVAGE, Minn. (WCCO) -- A 5th grader in Savage is sharing a message as part of today's Day of Service: "It's only one day.. but this one day could change everything"

Shrey Pothani came up with the idea for "Service Saturday" a few weeks ago -- he wanted people in his community to do something nice for someone else.

After meeting with his principal and the mayor, today's Day of Service was official.

He says he hopes other kids will remember how much fun it was to help people today.

"I think it's really cool they're planning to do this instead of playing outside or something," Pothani said. "This is the first time we've ever done this and it's really cool. People are excited to do something like this."

Today's volunteers made fleece blankets, assembled hygiene kits, packed meals and created activities for kids in the hospital.

Pothani wants to make Service Saturday an annual event, and hopes to expand it into other cities next year.

He also started a service club at his school, it now has over 100 members.
