Sanders Brings Campaign To Duluth, St. Paul Ahead Of Iowa Caucus

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is making two campaign stops in Minnesota Tuesday, just a week away from the Iowa Caucuses.

Polls show Sen. Sanders is in a very close race with Hillary Clinton in Iowa.

In Minnesota, Sanders stopped at the Saint Paul RiverCentre at 7 p.m. Tuesday, drawing a massive crowd, estimated at around 15,000 by campaign officials.

They are calling it the "Future to Believe in Rally with Bernie Sanders." Doors open at 6 p.m., but thousands were lining up to get in hours earlier.

Sanders spoke about a wide range of issues, including getting big money out of politics, combating climate change and making college affordable.

Here's what he said Monday night about college at a Democratic presidential town hall in Iowa:

"A college degree today is the equivalent of what a high school degree was 50 years ago. People want to criticize me, fine. I believe that every kid in this country who has the ability and the desire should be able to get a higher education regardless of the income of his family. And I will pay for that through a tax on Wall Street speculation," Sanders said.

Sanders said he also wants to raise Americans' taxes so that everyone can have health care coverage through a single-payer government system. There wouldn't be any co-pays or deductibles.

Before coming to St. Paul, Sanders held a rally in Duluth at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center Arena at 3 p.m.

While polls are close in Iowa, they are a bit more clear in other states. The latest CBS News/YouGov Poll has Sanders just one point behind Clinton in Iowa.

In New Hampshire, that same poll shows Sanders ahead by 19 points. It's just the opposite in South Carolina, where the CBS Battleground tracker shows Sanders trailing Clinton by 22 points.

Here in Minnesota, Clinton is ahead of Sanders by 34 points in a new Star Tribune Minnesota poll.
