1 dead, 1 injured in shooting at Robbinsdale park amid large gathering: "A very chaotic scene"

Minneapolis suburb reeling after 2 shot in park attack

A woman is dead and a man is recovering after a shooting on May 4 during a large gathering at a Twin Cities park, according to police.

It happened just after 9:20 p.m. at Sanborn Park in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. Police say responding officers found a "a very chaotic scene," and a 19-year-old woman who had been shot in the head. She was taken to a nearby hospital where police say she died on May 12. A medical examiner identified her as Amarie Cashayla-Marie Alowonle of North St. Paul.

Just after 10 p.m., a man in his 20s showed up at another hospital with a gunshot wound. Police believe he was hurt in the same shooting and described his injuries as serious.

Police believe there were multiple shooters, with a "high amount" of shots fired. They cannot confirm what brought on the gunfire, but say the heavily used park doesn't have a history of trouble.

"Although there were many people present, little information was shared with the police," the department said in a statement.

On Monday morning, the park was calm and quiet, with only curious neighbors and a lone bullet to give any suggestion that such violence occurred only hours earlier. Neighbor Acuin Meyer had a front row seat to the chaotic scene.

"I've seen this type of deal happen before, but it was just like they just light the fireworks, toss it, think it's funny," Meyer said. "Then I hear absolute blood-curdling screaming. I'm like no way. Like no way that just happened in front of my house."

He said there was a large group — dozens of people — gathered at the park when chaos erupted.

"I heard like 10 shots go off, like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom," he said. "Everyone ran off. I was tempted to run in and help, but there was cars flying around, like they were almost hitting the people around the ground."

Police say no arrests have been made, and they're asking for anyone with information on this shooting — or those with surveillance footage around or near Sanborn Park — to call 763-531-1242 or 1-800-222-8477. Videos can be sent by email here

If the video file is too large to send, officials say a different link will be sent to submit the footage, or police will send someone to pick up the file.
