Robbinsdale Group Files Lawsuit To Save Historic Theatre

ROBBINSDALE, Minn. (WCCO) -- A group trying to a save a historic theatre in Robbinsdale has filed a lawsuit to stop crews from tearing it down.

Friends of The Historic Terrace Theatre say it was their last resort to keep the theater standing. The grocery store chain Hy-Vee wants to demolish the theater and build a store in its place.

Hy-Vee had planned a 91,500-square-foot grocery in Robbinsdale, which would have been its seventh location in the Twin Cities. The Des Moines-based company quickly became a target for people seeking to save the historic Terrace Theatre from being demolished to make way for development on the 10-acre site.

A separate group called Save The Historic Terrace Theater, who are part of the Historical Society of Robbinsdale, gathered more than 1,000 signatures calling for a boycott of the grocer.

The lawsuit stopped the Robbinsdale City Council from taking action on the project Tuesday night. The Terrace Theatre was built in 1951, and has been closed since 1999.
