Richfield Family Saves Ducks From Sewer

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Torrential rains and saturated earth have been causing a lot of problems in Minnesota during the past week, but not every story has been calamitous.

While out on assignment Thursday, WCCO photojournalist Tom Aviles happened upon a dramatic rescue that had a happy ending.

A family in Richfield noticed that a mama duck was walking around in circles in an apparent state of stress. And the tell-tale chirping from a corner sewer brought attention to seven ducklings that had evidently fallen through the grate.

"You don't ever mess with someone's babies," said the Richfield family's mother.

The family used a fishing net to reach down into the grate and scoop the ducklings to safety, but one of them slipped further into the sewer system.

That's when special teams were summoned to the scene. They grabbed their special duck rescue bucket, opened up a manhole and traced the sound of the duckling.

And just like that, the mama duck and her seven progeny were reunited and went on their merry way.
