Red Lake Man, 20, Arrested After Pursuit That Injured Deputy Sheriff

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 20-year-old Red Lake man is in jail after leading law enforcement on a pursuit that injured a Beltrami County Deputy Sheriff late Friday afternoon, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office says they assisted Red Lake police and the FBI in a pursuit of a fleeing vehicle traveling south on MN Highway 89 near the Red Lake Casino. The driver, later identified as Nodin Makwa and was believed to be armed with a firearm and sword, was allegedly involved in an assault involving weapons on the Red Lake Reservation.

After a couple of unsuccessful attempts to stop the vehicle, a deputy successfully ended the pursuit with a PIT maneuver.

As officers approached Makwa's vehicle, which was barricaded in, he attempted to flee again by reversing at a high speed. A Beltrami County Deputy Sheriff was struck and injured by the vehicle.

Makwa struck other law enforcement vehicles before being stopped.

Makwa was then arrested and is being held in the Clearwater County Jail pending a review by the Beltrami County Attorney's Office for formal criminal charges.

The injured deputy sheriff suffered serious injury and was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale where his current condition is reported as stable.

The incident is being investigated.
