Putting A Carleton National Champion To The Test

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Carleton College sophomore Amelia Campbell had quite a track and field season. Last month, she won a national championship in the heptathlon.

Not only that, she finished with the third-most points in Division III history. Campbell is also only the fifth woman in NCAA history at any level to win a national title in the heptathlon and pentathlon in the same year. It prompted WCCO-TV's David McCoy to put her to the test in Northfield to see if she could handle the pressure.

The heptathlon is a grueling competition featuring seven events over two days. It takes a superior athlete to do it. The events include the 100 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 meter dash, long jump, javelin and the 800 meter run.

At the NCAA Championships, Campbell had personal bests in the high jump, shot put, javelin and 800 meter run.

"In the heptathlon you never want it to come down to the 800 meter run," Campbell said. "I did realize that I had won, but I was in a lot of pain at that point so it hadn't sunk in yet. When I went up on the podium, that was an amazing experience."
