'Violators Will Be Shot, Survivors Will Be Shot Again': St. Paul Homeowner Arrested After Shooting Car Theft Suspect
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Two bullet holes now mark a home across the street from where St. Paul Police say a 36-year-old resident shot a suspected car thief multiple times on Tuesday morning.
This story really begins a few blocks away on Forest Avenue and Case Street on St. Paul's east side. Police say they tried to pull over the stolen car at about 10 a.m., but the driver sped away and crashed on Payne and Jenks Avenues.
After responding to that incident, authorities found the driver shot multiple times in a yard outside a house on the 600 block of Cook Avenue. The homeowner was there, holding a gun. He was later booked into the Ramsey County Jail on suspicion on aggravated assault.
The home where the shooter lives has this sign in the window which reads, "No Trespassing: Violators Will Be Shot, Survivors Will Be Shot Again!"
A family member there told us he is a "hardworking man who was just trying to protect his family," and that his wife and 6-month-old baby were home at the time.
WCCO-TV spoke with the mother of the man who was shot earlier Tuesday afternoon. She said he is recovering, and is doing OK. St. Paul police say he was booked into the Ramsey County Jail on two charges of auto theft. One is from Tuesday's incident, while the other was from a previous, separate incident.
