Police Apprehend Homicide Suspect After He Flees In Fridley

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A homicide suspect is in custody after a high speed chase that went through the northern Minneapolis suburbs this morning. Police are not releasing any details about the homicide the suspect is accused of or about anything about the suspect specifically.

The chase disrupted traffic Tuesday morning in some neighborhoods in Robbinsdale and Fridley.

MnDOT video showed some of the police action in Fridley just east of Central Avenue and just south of interstate 694.

Minneapolis Police homicide investigators tried to stop and arrest a murder suspect in Robbinsdale just after 7:20 a.m. The suspect took off, and police used two different PIT maneuvers to try and stop him. After the second pit maneuver the suspect tried to escape on foot but was arrested in Fridley around 8:40 a.m.

Police say safety protocols were in place during the chase.

"We do not want to put the public in danger by pursuing somebody, however this is known to be a person wanted for murder and delayed apprehension could put the public at risk," the Minneapolis Police Department's John Eldar said. "Officers from several jurisdictions surrounded and did a perimeter, and the suspect was subsequently taken into custody without any harm to anyone involved."

Police say no one was hurt during the operation and that they hope to release more information later in the day.

The chase caught neighbors' attention, including Hend Aly.

"I was wondering the same thing. What is going on around here? Never seen so many cops in this area before," Aly said. "It's terrifying. They caught him? OK, good, that is what we need to know."

They say deputies from the Anoka and Hennepin County sheriff's departments, as well as officers from the Fridley, Robbinsdale and Columbia Heights' police departments all helped in the pursuit.

Police say an update will come later this week.
