1 Dead Following Drive-By Shooting In Richfield

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 24-year-old man is dead after being shot in the chest in Richfield Monday night in a drive-by shooting -- the city's first murder since 2013.

Richfield police say that 911 calls came in shortly before 11:30 p.m. reporting gunshots on 64th Street, between Fourth and Fifth avenues, near Veterans Park.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim lying in the street. Emergency crews tried to address the victim's wounds, but he died shortly after.

The victim has yet to be identified.

Residents in the area say they didn't hear anything unusual Monday night besides the fireworks for the city's large Fourth of July celebration.

"Everything was calm early in the evening over there," said resident Carlos Giron. "There were fireworks, big ones. I woke up around 12:30 p.m., when the police were here."

Police have released a description of a vehicle seen by witnesses. It's a 1990s gray minivan with a sliding door on the driver's side. Authorities believe four people were in the van when the shooting took place.

Police say there is no connection between the shooting and Richfield's Fourth of July celebration.

No arrests have been made.
