Officials: Man Believed To Have Drowned In Mississippi River

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) –A man is believed to have drowned, authorities say, after he was seen in Minneapolis Tuesday morning going under water in the fast-flowing Mississippi River.

Witnesses reported seeing the man in the river north of the Hennepin Avenue Bridge just after 10:30 a.m., the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said.

When emergency crews got to the scene, they threw the man a rope with a flotation device attached to it, but the rescue attempt failed.

The man was last seen going under water. Authorities have not found him, and they believe that he drowned.

Crews are searching the river as part of a recovery effort.

Authorities gave no word as to the man's identity.

The incident is under investigation.
