Police Investigate Baby's Death In N. Minneapolis Home

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 4-month-old Minneapolis baby has died, and officers are trying to figure out how it happened.

Minneapolis Police say the child's mother, Shalynda Raino, called 911 at about 8:50 a.m., saying her baby needed help.

When officers arrived to the residence on Emerson Avenue North, they attempted CPR on the child, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police interviewed Shalynda Raino shortly after they found the baby, which is standard procedure. They say it's not clear what happened.

The child's aunt and uncle, Simone and Jerrell Raino, say there is a family history of SIDS, but they just don't know what happened to their niece.

"My niece, she just like smile all the time, like that's how she came here, you know what I'm saying?" Jerrell Raino said. "She came here just smiling, laughing."

John Elder with Minneapolis Police says cases involving babies are always tough on everyone involved.

"It's a very daunting call emotionally for our staff," Elder said.

According to a report out of Georgia, there's a warrant for Shalynda Raino in a 2012 case. She was charged with family violence to an adult male and cruelty to a 2-year-old child.

"[My niece is] gonna live through us," Simone Raino said. "She's gonna live through us regardless of the fact that she's not here right now."

Minneapolis Police say they are awaiting the medical examiner's report to figure out their next step in the investigation.
