Police: Family Member Backs Out Over 14-Month-Old

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (WCCO) -- Police in Brooklyn Center say that a 14-month-old was killed Monday afternoon after a family member ran over the child while backing out of a driveway.

The incident happened along the 5400 block of Colfax Avenue North.

"Officers responded to a child that was struck by a vehicle. When officers arrived, it was obvious that the child was deceased," Brooklyn Center Police Commander Brian Peters said.

Police say a family member was outside grilling with three children in a Brooklyn Center neighborhood around 3 p.m. Monday. When they went to move their car out of the driveway, they accidently ran over the 14-month-old girl.

"Didn't realize the other child was still behind the vehicle," Peters said.

The toddler's mother was first to arrive home after police.  Neighbors say it's a reminder to hug your children closely and keep them in your sight at all times.

"Things happen so fast and this is just an absolute clear reminder to keep everybody as close as you can," neighbor Rich Haeg said.

Police have not said who the family member was driving the car.  The name of the child has not been released.
