Police: Driver Shot After Pinning Officer

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Des Moines police say they shot a man who struck an officer with his car in a hotel parking lot.

Police spokesman Sgt. Jason Halifax says officers initiated contact with the male driver at the Cozy Rest Motel early Monday. He says the man tried to flee from police and hit a female officer, pinning her against her patrol vehicle.

Halifax says the pinned officer and her partner shot the suspect and his car. He says the driver fled southbound before surrendering to other officers.

The injured officer and the driver were taken to an area hospital. Their conditions are unknown but Halifax described both as "stable." Authorities haven't released any names.

The suspect's vehicle was reported stolen from Minnesota.
