1 killed, 5 others hurt in Alexandria house fire

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. — A man is dead and three people were airlifted to a Twin Cities hospital following an Alexandria house fire Wednesday morning.

According to Alexandria police, the fire was reported shortly after 6:30 a.m. on the 1000 block of Jefferson Street. Multiple agencies responded to the scene.

When responders arrived, they discovered that six people lived inside the single-family home.

A man was found dead inside the house and five other victims were taken to a hospital in Alexandria. Three of the five victims were later airlifted to Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis. The other two victims were treated and released from the Alexandria hospital.

Officials say an Alexandria police officer and a Douglas County deputy sheriff were also injured during rescue efforts. Police did not say if they were taken to the hospital, but they did receive treatment and were released. 

No other injuries were reported. The condition of the victims being treated is unknown at this time, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
