Police: 1 Killed, 1 Injured In Overnight Minneapolis Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Police say a shooting early Sunday morning in a Minneapolis bar has left one man dead and another injured.

According to Minneapolis police, officers responded around 2 a.m. to the 400 block of 2nd Avenue North after receiving a report that someone had been shot.

Upon arrival, authorities found an adult man in his 20s suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim had no pulse or respiration. Authorities say officers began chest compressions and were able to re-establish a heartbeat. The victim was taken to Hennepin Healthcare with life-threatening injuries; he died several hours later.

Authorities say Hennepin Healthcare reported that another adult male in his 20s walked into the emergency room with a non-life threatening gunshot wound believed to be from the same incident.

"We are doing everything in our powers to ensure that downtown remains safe," John Elder, public information officer with Minneapolis Police, said.

It's unclear how someone with a gun got into the club. Calls to Rouge management and questions to owners about security went unanswered Sunday afternoon.

Nearby at Dulono's Pizza, assistant manager Laurence Hayes said news of another late-night shooting in the popular Warehouse District is becoming all too familiar.

"Nobody wants to hear about anybody in their neighborhood or area getting hurt," he said. "The strangest thing for us is that the police station is nearly a block away and nobody seems hesitant to still do some of the things that they're doing."

He feels the two incidents will only hurt the perception of safety downtown, one that's already wearing thin on his customers.

"In general I think downtown primarily is a good, fun place to go," he added.

Police mentioned that a lot of people who might have witnessed the shooting quickly left the area, likely out of fear. They hope those witnesses will come forward with any information that can help them arrest the shooter.

Sunday night, Ward 3 City Councilor Steve Fletcher put out a statement on Facebook saying:

"This weekend, we had two nights in a row with shootings at bar close in the entertainment district, one of which proved to be fatal. That's unacceptable, and tragic. MPD is working hard to respond, both to catch those responsible and prevent additional incidents, and they're producing results. In the 48 hours since the first incident, they've seized 6 additional guns that very well could have been part of additional incidents if not for their quick work. It would be irresponsible to speculate about an ongoing investigation – we will learn more about what led to these specific incidents, whether they're connected or not, how a gun got into a nightclub past security, and more. In the meantime, we live every day in a society at perpetual risk for gun violence, in which guns are all too readily available, and in which our state and federal governments still refuse to regulate these deadly weapons. The City of Minneapolis and all of our community partners will continue to focus our efforts on preventing and responding to incidents like what we've seen this weekend."
