Police: 17-year-old arrested after threat made outside Edina High School

17-year-old in custody after threats made outside Edina High School

EDINA, Minn. -- Edina police say a 17-year-old boy is in custody in connection to threats made outside Edina High School.

Both Edina High School and Valley View Middle School switched to online learning Friday after a "credible threat" was made the night before, school officials said.

Police later confirmed early Friday afternoon that a 17-year-old boy was arrested in Minneapolis in connection to the threats.

According to police, the boy took a Snapchat video of himself in the parking lot of the school. In the video, he had a handgun and an extended magazine in his lap. The words "Come outside, b----" were written in the caption and the end of the video showed the doors of the school, police said. He then left the school grounds.

The video was reported to police around 8 p.m. Thursday. An investigation that involved Edina police, Minneapolis police and the FBI worked to identify the boy overnight. They later located and arrested the boy on the 1500 block of East Franklin Avenue.

The boy is not a current or former student at the school, police said. He could face felony charges of threats of violence, and carrying a gun on school property, Edina Chief Todd Milburn said.

Milburn said it's only the latest violent incident they've seen on school grounds in the Twin Cities.

"We're concerned about it. There's been this increase in possession of hand guns, or our youth going to hand guns to settle beefs, disputes, arguments, and it's very concerning to us in the school district — that's what we're seeing as far as a trend," he said.

Liz Leming's daughter's elementary school, just around the corner, still had class in person.

"The proximity is scary," she said. "The fact that the high school and middle school are connected - they're literally up the hill. I can see the lights from my back porch. I can hear the band practicing, the sports games going on, and she's down the street."

The incident remains under investigation.

Edina schools say extracurricular activities are on as planned for Friday evening. When students return to school next week, extra police officers will be present at each campus.
