'I Feel Blessed': Plymouth Police Help Family After Baby Delivered In Driveway

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The miracle of life doesn't always happen in the comfort of a hospital bed.

One Twin Cities family didn't even make it out of the driveway Friday morning.

"I feel blessed," said Antonio Torres, as he looked down at his peaceful newborn son Jayden, who was fast asleep. "All he wants is sleep, sleep, sleep."

Little Jayden deserves it, but so does dad and mom, Anabel, after their newest family member's dramatic entrance to the world.

"It's a beautiful story," said Torres.

It's also a stressful one, considering it wasn't in a room at Maple Grove Hospital -- but their home driveway next to a busy County Road C in Plymouth where Jayden was born.

"I went to work and like 45 minutes later she called me, she's like, 'Hey you gotta come back home because I think it's coming,'" he said.

As they got to the car, Anabel quickly realized a trip to the hospital was not going to happen. Antonio called 911, but he knew Jayden wasn't going to wait for first responders to arrive.

"She's like, 'Oh I think the feel the head's coming out.' So I put her pants down and I go, 'Yeah it's coming out!" said Torres. "It feels scary because I don't know what to do. I did my best."

Little Jayden was suddenly in Torres' arms as he knelt on their snow-covered driveway. Plymouth Police Officers Lindberg and Thomas arrived within seconds, wrapping Jayden in a blanket until paramedics got to the house.

"Many times we're on the other end of the life cycle when we're called to scenes," said Police Chief Mike Goldstein. "And here, to be able to be part of the birth of a baby, that's pretty special and it's something those officers will never forget."

Nor will the Torres family, especially the dad who handled the special delivery.

"I was very nervous, I don't know what to do, but you know, I did it," he said.

The Torres family wanted to say thank you to the officers and paramedics on scene, as well as the staff at Maple Grove Hospital. This is their fifth child, and Torres said he'll gladly stop at that number.
