Unauthorized Plane Lands On Lake Hazeltine During Ryder Cup

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after a small plane landed on Lake Hazeltine Sunday afternoon during the final day of Ryder Cup action.

The plane landed on the lake, which is private and has no public access, at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday near the seventh hole at Hazeltine National Golf Club during singles match play. Authorities said a city ordinance in effect prohibited any activity on the lake during the Ryder Cup, and the event's security included monitoring the lake.

The plane is registered to a man identified as John Edwin Trusheim of Chaska and his residence is near the golf course. It's not known if he was flying the plane when it landed.

Authorities quickly moved to get the pilot and the plane off the lake. Play on the golf course was not impacted by the incident. Why the plane landed there remains under investigation.
