Peaceful Rally At U Over Ferguson Decision
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A rally at the University of Minnesota over events in Ferguson, Missouri, is unfolding peacefully.
Several hundred people have gathered on the steps of Coffman Union to show solidarity with Michael Brown, the young man black man shot and killed by white police officer Darren Wilson in August. Violence erupted Monday night in Ferguson after a grand jury declined to indict Wilson.
The demonstrators sat down for 4 ½ minutes of silence to mark the 4 ½ hours that Brown's body reportedly lay in the street after he was shot. Some carried signs that read, "Black lives matter" and "No justice, no peace."
Nivedita Sriram, an 18-year-old freshman, said the lack of indictment shows the justice system is broken.
Other rallies were planned elsewhere in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth.
