Pair Arrested In South Dakota Following Chase Face Charges

FAIRFAX, S.D. (AP) — A man and a woman are facing numerous felony charges in connection with a weekend chase that involved two states and involved an exchange of gunfire, authorities in South Dakota said Wednesday.

Attorney General Marty Jackley said the charges against 29-year-old Samantha Lane and 29-year-old Nicholas Speckmeier include aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, grand theft and possession of a loaded firearm. Lane, of Sioux Falls, and Speckmeier, of Worthington, Minnesota, were each arrested on more than 10 charges.

The incident began around 12:30 a.m. Saturday when a deputy attempted a traffic stop outside of Bonesteel. A pursuit ensued, and as Speckmeier and Lane neared the Nebraska state line, one of their vehicle's front tires gave out, slowing to about 40 mph, the Daily Republic reported. It was then that the pair shot at deputies, who fired back.

The pursuit ended in Fairfax, and the Gregory County Sheriff's Office is crediting two brothers with helping in the arrest.

The sheriff's office said resident Matt Moos attempted to slow the progress of the suspects, until they shot at him. When Speckmeier wrecked his vehicle and tried to steal Kyle Moos' pickup truck from him, Moos pointed a shotgun at Speckmeier and held him in place until officers arrived.

Gregory County Sheriff Tim Drey said Lane was arrested in a yard, allegedly holding a jammed pistol.

It wasn't immediately clear Wednesday if Lane and Speckmeier have legal representation.
