Organizers Turn North American Pond Hockey Tournament Into Bean-Bag Competition

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Instead of throwing in the towel when weather caused a hockey tournament to be canceled, event organizers threw in a bag.

A bean bag to be exact.

Last week, organizers announced the North American Pond Hockey Championships on Lake Minnetonka was canceled due to weather. Instead, organizers decided to throw a bag-tournament!

The tournament begins Friday, Jan. 22 and runs through Sunday, Jan. 24. Over 100 teams are set to compete. It takes place at Maynard's Restaurant on the shores of Lake Minnetonka.

The tournament is set to be the world's largest outdoor winter bean-bag tournament.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams to place.

In addition to the tournament, there will be concerts on Friday and Saturday beginning at 7 p.m. and a 5k.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Hendrickson Foundation, a nonprofit that helps people with physical or cognitive issues play hockey. It is presented by Club Cambria.
