Officials Identify Girl Who Drowned In New Brighton Creek

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Officials have identified the pre-teen girl who drowned Thursday after jumping into a New Brighton creek.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiners' Office said 11-year-old Banfegha Eyongochu, of New Brighton, drowned in Rice Creek.

The girl jumped into the water near the Mississippi Street pedestrian bridge, just north of Long Lake Regional Park.

She was underwater for 20 minutes, officials say, before being pulled from the creek and taken to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, where she died hours later.

Her death is under investigation.
