BCA Identifies Officers, Subject In Eagan Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the man and officers involved in the shooting incident in Eagan last Sunday.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the man as 37-year-old Justin Lee Kulhanek-Derks, of Eagan.

According to police, around noon officers received a 911 call that a man had fired multiple shots into the air and some towards the Forest Ridge apartment building, located on Ironwood Lane.

Upon arrival, officers said they approached Kulhanek-Derks on foot and were fired upon.

Two officers, identified as Sgt. Nathan Tennessen and officer Alison Burstein, then returned fire, striking Kuhlhanek-Derks.

He was pronounced dead on the scene. No officers were injured.

Sgt. Tennessen is an 18-year veteran of the Eagan Police Department, while Burstein has been with the department for four years.

Burstein and Tennessen are both on administrative leave, which is standard procedure after a police shooting.

This incident is currently under investigation by the Minnesota BCA.
