Suspect dead after 2 deputies shot in Winsted

WINSTED, Minn. -- A man who allegedly shot two deputies when they tried to serve him an arrest warrant is now dead, authorities say.

The shootings allegedly happened in Winsted Monday morning. The city is in McLeod County, west of the Twin Cities.

According to authorities, two deputies were struck by gunfire in the incident and are out of the hospital Monday evening.

Police waited for hours outside a residence they believed the suspect to be inside. After hours of no response, police used a robot to go inside the house and found him dead.

"They flew some drones inside the residence and were able to get the robot inside which was able to open the doors, fly through the house and secure it that way," said Sheriff Tim Langenfeld. "Obviously this isn't the outcome we wanted for anybody since there's another family hurting right now but from our standpoint, with the families that are involved, it's good news."

Deputy Malz was one of the officers struck by gunfire. The other officer is Deputy Caturia. McLeod County Sheriff

A nearby daycare was evacuated as well as neighbors.

"I was really stressed but I was trying to stay calm for the kids. I told them we're going on a field trip, we're going in a big armored truck, and then we're going to go see their parents," said Rose Lindewall with Lindewall Adventure. "Definitely something I'll never forget."

Langenfeld says he doesn't know if anyone on the law enforcement side fired their weapons during the warrant execution.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will be investigating the scene.
