BCA Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting In Winona
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place in Winona Saturday.
According to the preliminary investigation, two Winona Police Department officers pulled over a vehicle driving erratically around 12:15 a.m. Friday on the 1800 block of Garvin Heights Road.
At one point, both officers fired their weapons, with one shot hitting the person in the vehicle, the BCA said. The person then fled in the vehicle and the officers pursued them. The State Patrol and Winona County Sheriff's Office deputies joined in the pursuit.
They pursued the vehicle for five miles before it was stopped by stop sticks at Highway 43 and Interstate 90. The person refused to exit the vehicle and the Winona Emergency Response Unit was called to the scene, according to the BCA.
After negotiating for about an hour, the person exited the vehicle and was transported to Winona Health hospital. They were then transferred to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, where they were treated for a non-life threatening injury and released. They are now being held in the Winona County Jail, the BCA said.
A handgun was recovered from the vehicle.
The BCA said two Winona police officers have been placed on standard administrative leave.
