NTSB Releases Recommendations For Oil Train Safety

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The National Transportation Safety Board is out with some new recommendations to help prevent explosive oil train wrecks.

They include retrofitting train cars with protective systems better able to withstand fire, and relief valves that can prevent pressure from building inside the tank cars.

Ed Greenberg with the American Association of Railroads says the recommendations don't go far enough.

Greenberg is part of our WCCO Radio series, "Tracking Danger: Minnesota's Crude Reality."

The recommendations come as the U.S. Department of Transportation considers new safety rules for oil trains, which analysts predict will derail an average of 10 times a year over the next two decades.
